What if..... or Even if....?

What if… or Even if…

Are you prone to worry?

Last week was a tough one for me… for whatever reason I was on a low ebb and felt overwhelmed with the “what if..” kind of questions that so often plague us when we feel anxious about the future. I needed to make some decisions about women’s ministry… but how do you do that when you don’t know what the next six months will look like? What if we aren’t able to meet in person next term?

I had to organise a birthday present for a niece… what if I don’t get to see my family again for a long time?

I had to make some decisions about my car.. what if it fails it’s MOT and i can’t afford to fix it ?

And then there are the “What ifs” that just plague your head at night.. what if we have to choose a bubble and no one wants me in theirs? What if my dad gets Covid 19? What if I’m not able to travel to see my friend in the states ever again?

But as I was out for a walk trying to clear my head, I felt God remind me of something I heard once… change the what ifs… to even ifs…

Even if we can’t meet together physically for a while yet, God will grow his church, and provide for us and do good through this time of separation

Even if money is tight, God will provide for our needs and we’ll learn to depend on him in new ways

Even if someone I love gets ill God is able to be there to comfort and being help and healing or may even use this illness to bring them to God, or bring them home…

There isn’t a single “what if” that we cant apply the Character of God to, remembering his promises and his love and care.

The book of Habbakuk ends with this very  thing… (here it is from the GW translation for emphasis tho I prefer the NIV)

17 Even if the fig tree does not bloom
and the vines have no grapes,
even if the olive tree fails to produce
and the fields yield no food,
even if the sheep pen is empty
and the stalls have no cattle—
18 even then,
I will be happy with the Lord.
I will truly find joy in God, who saves me.
19 The Lord Almighty is my strength.
He makes my feet like those of a deer.
He makes me walk on the mountains.

Are there any What if’s you need to change to Even ifs today?

A song that helped me to remember that God will be enough for tomorrow is this one by Lou Fellingham’s:

He lavishes grace as our burdens grow greater
He sends us more strength as our labours increase
To added afflictions He offers more mercy
To multiplied trials He multiplies peace

When we have exhausted our store of endurance
When our strength has failed and the day is half done
When we've reached the end of our earthly resources
Our Father's full giving is only begun
Our Father's full giving is only begun

So lean hard
Lean hard
Lean on the everlasting arms

Praying that today we will trust in God for whatever the future looks like
