The Lord's Prayer (2)

Here's the second of five parts in the Lord's Prayer: Person, PROGRAMME, Provision, Pardon, Protection. "Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven"

Over the weekend we've heard a lot about individuals breaking the rules of lockdown.  Naturally people resent even the appearance of hypocrisy and inconsistency by those in power, who use their position to tell us one thing and then they do their own thing.  However, that is not the way things work in God's kingdom.  When the Bible uses that phrase it it is describing God as a king, who rules over all things in heaven and earth - and the good news is that His rule is good and consistent.

There's an old trick question in theology: Is there anything that God cannot do?  In fact, the answer is: YES!  God cannot act inconsistently with His own character.  God is truth, so He cannot lie.  God is good, so He cannot do evil.  God is love, so He cannot be unkind.  God is just, so He cannot let the guilty go unpunished.  God is light, so He cannot tolerate darkness.  For a world that struggles with injustice, selfishness, lies and so much else - the good news is that it is God's programme to bring His heavenly kingdom upon the earth and bring an end to all these manifestations of evil.

Through the gospel, it is God's programme that those who trust in Christ can find a home in that good kingdom one day.  Also through this prayer we are to invite God to have His reign in our lives on this day - to bring His good rule to bear on our thoughts, our appetites, our words, our activities.  This prayer prepares our will today to surrender to God's will when it contradicts our thoughts and desires - and reminds us that what God's rule requires of us is ultimately what is good for us (just as with hindsight on childhood we see when we fell out with our parents at the dinner table, refusing to eat our greens, that they were right and their rule was good).
