Standing Stones...Remembering God's Faithfulness

“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes I will remember your wonders of old.”  Psalm 77:11

Do you ever notice piles of rocks stacked up, sometimes balancing a bit precariously, on beaches or up mountains?  Carefully placed and stacked just so?  In the Bible Standing Stones are mentioned several times as places to stop and remember the faithfulness of God.  Sometimes they were spontaneous and sometimes they were placed there at God’s command.  In Joshua 3 and 4 the Israelites were commanded by God to take stones from the Jordan River to place on the dry land as a memorial and reminder that God had brought them safely across on dry land to the Promised Land.  (For more passages where Standing Stones are mentioned see Genesis 28 and Exodus 24.)

I recently came across an entry in my journal, where at the prompting of a friend I had taken some time to note down where I had seen God’s faithfulness.  Times I could look back on and thank the Lord for.  I had sketched some stones and listed some things I was thankful for…the list is certainly not long enough and it has been a timely reminder that I want to slow down this week, maybe choose some of that solitude I mentioned last week, and walk into a place of thankfulness and remembrance to God.  Where have I forgotten God’s faithfulness to me?  What am I thankful for?  Where have I seen His provision, protection, and power in my life?  I am not yet what I am going to be, but Christ’s work at the cross has changed me and is continuing to change me.  What standing stones of God’s faithfulness can I share and bear witness to with others?

Have you ever taken time to stop and purposely think about standing stones in your life?  What are you thankful to the Lord for?  Where can you see God’s faithfulness to you not only during this season of lock-down, but throughout your life?

“Gratitude can transform common days into thanksgivings, turn routine jobs into joy, and change ordinary opportunities into blessings.” William Arthur Ward
