My Times are in Thy Hand

Psalm 31:14-15

“But I trust in you, Lord; I say, “You are my God.” 15 My times are in your hands..”

Maybe, like me, you have been feeling the fragility of life and your own mortality a lot more closely in the last few months.  Some days, when I hear of another family friend who has died during this pandemic, or we get news that a loved one is gradually failing more and more, I just ache. On Friday night, as my Mom and I were crying and praying together, and reminding each other of our Faithful Shepherd who is with us each step of our journies (Psalm 23), she reminded me of an old hymn we used to sing.  ‘My Times are in They Hand’ was penned by William Freeman Lloyd in 1824, but the words are as true today as they were back then!

My times are in thy hand;
my God, I wish them there;
my life, my friends, my soul, I leave
entirely to thy care.

2 My times are in thy hand,
whatever they may be;
pleasing or painful, dark or bright,
as best may seem to thee.

3 My times are in thy hand;
why should I doubt or fear?
My Father's hand will never cause
his child a needless tear.

4 My times are in thy hand,
Jesus the Crucified;
those hands my cruel sins had pierced
are now my guard and guide.

5 My times are in Thy hand,
I'll always trust in Thee;
And, after death, at Thy right hand
I shall forever be.

May these words bless and encourage and settle your heart as they did mine.  May we trust in Christ, knowing we have nothing to fear because of all that He has done for us.  We can be at peace knowing that our times are in His hands, the safest place they could ever be.  Nothing will happen to us that is outside of His control and He is holding onto us tighter than we are holding on to Him.

Maybe take some time to read the words over again.  Pray over them.  Ask the Lord to show where you have been fearful or anxious.  Where are you holding on too tightly?  Where have you seen Him holding onto you? May we say with the Psalmist 'I trust in you, Lord. You are my God.  My times are in your hands."

Take a moment to read the rest of Psalm 31, and if you have time, listen to this beautiful arrangement of My Times are in Thy Hand, by Forever Be Sure.
